How to Get Your Site Into Google’s AI Overviews
By Kevin Villatoro Burgos · Updated: October 21, 2026
Short answer: There’s no special trick or markup to appear in Google’s AI Overviews. Google says pages need to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet; the same SEO best practices apply. Write helpful, original content that answers questions directly, keep the site technically accessible and make structured data match what’s visible.
What are AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries at the top of some Google results, with links to sources. AI Mode is a conversational search experience. Both draw on Google’s index.
What does Google officially say?
In AI features and your website, Google states there are no additional requirements: the page must be indexed and snippet-eligible. You don’t need new AI text files or special schema.
Best practices Google recommends
- Unique, helpful content written for people (helpful content).
- Good page experience on mobile.
- Crawlable pages, with important content in text.
- Structured data that matches visible content (structured data intro).
- An up-to-date Business Profile for local queries.
How to write direct-answer content
Answer first, explain second
Put a two- or three-line answer right under each heading.
Use question headings
Match the way customers actually ask.
Add what only you know
Your process, local details, real cases and data.
Link to official sources and include a real author bio.
Schema and technical access
Use JSON-LD for Organization or LocalBusiness, articles and FAQs where they’re visible. Don’t block Googlebot in robots.txt or your firewall. Avoid nosnippet on pages you want cited.
How to measure it in Search Console
AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic is included in the “Web” search type, without a separate filter. Track impressions and clicks on the queries you target, and leads in your CRM.
What about ChatGPT, Copilot and Gemini?
ChatGPT and Copilot rely partly on Bing, so get indexed there too. More in What is GEO?
Myths to ignore
- “You need special AI schema.” Google says no.
- “llms.txt gets you into AI Overviews.” Not for Google.
- “You can pay to be in AI Overviews.” Organic placement can’t be bought.
Quick checklist
- Pages indexed and snippet-eligible
- Direct answers under question headings
- Original, sourced content with an author
- Matching structured data
- Bing indexed too
Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?

Where do I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?
It’s counted within the Web search type; there’s no separate AI Overviews report.
Can I keep my content out of AI Overviews?
You can use nosnippet or related controls, but that also limits regular snippets.
Does an llms.txt file help with Google?
Google says it doesn’t use special AI files for AI Overviews.
