What Is GEO? How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT
By Kevin Villatoro Burgos · Updated: October 14, 2026
Short answer: GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting AI engines like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google’s AI Overviews to mention and cite your business in their answers. It doesn’t replace SEO; it’s built on top of it. If your site can’t be crawled, indexed and trusted, AI is unlikely to find you.
More customers skip the search results page and simply ask an AI: “Which insurance agency do you recommend in Chula Vista?” or “Who repairs AC units near me?” If your business isn’t in that answer, it doesn’t exist for that person. Here’s what GEO is, what Google, Bing, OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity officially say, and what a small business can do today.
Where does the term GEO come from?
It comes from an academic paper, “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization,” by researchers at Princeton and IIT Delhi, presented at KDD 2024 (arXiv 2311.09735). They define it as optimizing content to be more visible inside AI-generated answers.
- SEO: ranking in Google and Bing organic results.
- AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): writing so your content is the direct answer to a question. An industry term, not an official one.
- GEO: getting generative engines to cite, mention or recommend your brand.
Think of them as layers on the same foundation, not separate services.
How is GEO different from traditional SEO?
In SEO you compete for a spot in a list of links; in GEO you compete to be named inside an answer. The fundamentals are the same. Google says it plainly in its guide to AI features and your website: there are no extra requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet. You don’t need special “AI files” or markup. If someone sells you GEO as a shortcut around SEO, be skeptical.
How do ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity choose which businesses to mention?
Each works differently, but all of them need to be able to read your site first.
- ChatGPT: OAI-SearchBot decides whether your site can appear in ChatGPT search answers; GPTBot is for training and is separate (OpenAI crawlers). ChatGPT search also relies on third-party search providers (OpenAI).
- Claude: Claude-SearchBot indexes for Claude’s search; blocking it keeps you out (Anthropic).
- Perplexity: PerplexityBot indexes sites to show and link them (Perplexity).
- Copilot: runs on Bing’s crawling, indexing and ranking (Bing Webmaster Guidelines).
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: draw from Google’s index, with the usual controls (robots.txt, nosnippet, noindex).
The practical takeaway: Google and Bing are the front door. Many businesses only care about Google and forget Bing, which powers Copilot and is one of ChatGPT’s search sources.
What kind of content does AI cite most?
The GEO study tested techniques on 10,000 queries. Citing sources, adding quotations and including statistics worked best, with visibility gains of up to about 40% on their metrics. Keyword stuffing didn’t help (Aggarwal et al., 2024). It used mostly a simulated engine, so treat it as a strong hint, not a guarantee. Google’s advice on succeeding in AI search points the same way: original, helpful content, good page experience, technical access and structured data that matches what’s visible.
7 steps to show up in ChatGPT and other AI tools
1. Let the bots in
Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt, and check that your CDN or firewall isn’t blocking them. Training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended) are a business decision; Google-Extended doesn’t affect Google Search rankings.
2. Get indexed in Google and Bing
Set up Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your sitemap and turn on IndexNow. Bing also feeds Yahoo’s organic results.
3. Answer first, explain second
Write headings as your customers’ real questions and answer in the first two lines. Lists, steps, tables and clear definitions are easiest to quote.
4. Publish what only you know
AI already knows the generic answers. Your process, real customer questions, service areas, documented cases and cited sources are what get you mentioned.
5. Keep your Google Business Profile and Bing Places listing current
Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence (Google). Complete your profile, answer every review and import it into Bing Places. See our Google Business Profile guide.
6. Add consistent structured data
Use JSON-LD for your business, services and articles, and make it match the page. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere.
7. Measure what you can
- Search Console counts AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic inside “Web” search, with no separate breakdown.
- In GA4, create a channel group for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, copilot.microsoft.com, gemini.google.com and claude.ai.
- Once a month, ask each AI 20–30 questions your customers would ask and track trends, not one-off screenshots.
Mistakes to avoid
- Hidden text or instructions aimed at AI (“prompt injection”). Bing explicitly prohibits it.
- Mass-produced pages with no original value.
- Markup that doesn’t match the visible page.
- Fake or incentivized reviews.
Frequently asked questions
Is GEO the same as SEO?
No, but it depends on it. SEO gets you crawled, indexed and ranked; GEO focuses on being cited inside AI answers. Without solid SEO, GEO rarely works.
Do I need an llms.txt file to show up in ChatGPT?
Google says no special AI files are needed for AI Overviews. An llms.txt file can help some tools, but it doesn’t replace crawlable, indexed content.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
There’s no official way to buy a mention in organic AI answers. Ads in AI products, where they exist, are labeled separately.
How long does GEO take?
Technical fixes can be picked up in weeks once pages are re-crawled. Earning mentions takes months of consistent, original content and reviews.
Should I block AI training bots?
It’s a business decision. Blocking training bots like GPTBot doesn’t remove you from ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot.
