Google Business Profile in San Diego and Tijuana: Step-by-Step Guide 2026
By Kevin Villatoro Burgos · Updated: October 14, 2026
Short answer: To optimize your Google Business Profile, claim or create it, verify it, use your real business name (no keywords), pick the most specific primary category, complete your address or service area, hours, services and photos, and ask every customer for a review without offering anything in return. Google ranks local results by relevance, distance and prominence.
When someone searches “accountant near me” or “dentist in Chula Vista,” the first thing they usually see is a map with three businesses. That block comes from Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). Here’s how to set it up and improve it, based on Google’s own documentation, and which mistakes can get it suspended.
What is Google Business Profile and why does it matter?
It’s the free listing that shows your business in Google Search and Maps: name, address, phone, hours, photos, reviews and buttons to call or get directions. Google says local results are based mainly on three factors (Google Business Profile Help):
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher or the location they mention.
- Prominence: how well known you are, including links, reviews and ratings.
You can’t pay for a better local ranking. In a border region where people compare options on both sides, a complete profile is often your first impression.
How do I create and verify my profile?
- Use a company Google account, ideally on your own domain, not an employee’s or agency’s personal account.
- Search for an existing listing and claim it if it’s there. One profile per location.
- Verify. Google chooses the methods it offers: phone, text, email, video recording, live video call or postcard. For video, show your exterior sign, branded equipment and proof that you manage the place.
- Wait for review. It can take up to 5 business days. If you get a postcard, don’t edit your name, address or category while you wait (Verify your business).
- Add your agency as a manager, not an owner, so the profile always stays yours.
How should I set name, categories, services and photos?
Name: your real one, no keywords
Use the same name as your sign and website. Adding slogans, services or locations can get you suspended (Guidelines for representing your business). “Smile Dental” is fine; “Smile Dental – Best Dentist San Diego” is not.
Address or service area
If customers visit you, show the address and keep permanent signage. If you go to them (plumbing, pest control), hide the address and set a service area, generally no more than about a 2-hour drive. Virtual offices don’t qualify.
Categories, description and photos
- Pick the most specific primary category (“this business is…”) and as few extras as possible.
- Describe what you do, for whom and since when. No links or promo-heavy text.
- List each service, keep real hours (including holidays) and use a local phone number you control.
- Upload real photos: storefront, interior, team and work. Skip stock images.
How do I ask for reviews without breaking the rules?
Google’s Maps content policy prohibits incentives (discounts, gifts) for reviews, asking only happy customers, reviews from employees or family, and pressuring customers on-site. What you can do: ask every customer with a link or QR code, and reply to all reviews, briefly and without sharing personal details. The best moment is right after delivery, with a follow-up message that a CRM can automate. See RevOps and Sales Automation.
Most common mistakes
- Keywords in the business name, the top reason for suspensions.
- Duplicate listings for the same location.
- The profile owned by an agency or a former employee.
- Name, address and phone that don’t match your site and directories.
- Buying or incentivizing reviews.
- Abandoned profiles: old hours, unanswered reviews, years-old photos.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Google Business Profile cost?
Nothing. Creating and managing the profile is free, and Google doesn’t sell better local rankings.
How long does verification take?
Google says review can take up to 5 business days after you complete verification. Postcard codes usually arrive within 14 days.
Can I have a profile if I work from home?
Yes, as a service-area business: hide your home address and list the areas you serve.
Can I have one profile in Tijuana and another in San Diego?
Only if you have a real location in each city with staff and signage, or staffed service areas for each. One office can’t have two profiles.
Can I give a discount for a review?
No. Any incentive for a review counts as fake engagement under Google’s policies.
